30 Days of Aaliyah

Day 28: Rock The Boat (22/08/01-25/08/01)

Everything about this video is…I can’t even put it into words. She looked perfect. From her make up, to her wardrobe, to the dancing. I often wish she would’ve just stayed in Miami though where they filmed the majority of the video anyway…I could never understand why they had to fly to the Bahamas just to get some beach shots when they could’ve gotten some pretty amazing beach shots in Miami also.

My favourite scenes are without a doubt the underwater scenes which have now become so iconic since her passing. She looked like an Angel, especially towards the end where it looks like she’s ascending into the Heaven’s. She would’ve been proud of the outcome; of all of the hard word and dedication she put into making that video what it was.

I can’t watch this video too often because it brings back every feeling and every emotion of that day she passed away. And every tear I shed when I first watched this video. It’s sentimental yet heartbreaking all at the same time; still…it’s one of my favourites.

The youth of today need something and someone to aspire to. THIS is what should be promoted. This is what needs to be congratulated. I think so many celebrities these days glorify and focus on materialistic “success” rather than promote the things that really matter. Like Education. Instead of “dumbing” down the youth, how about talk about things that matter? Why not encourage them to succeed by promoting knowledge instead of drugs, violence, designer labels or how much money you still have in your pocket?
Aaliyah was one of the rare few who encouraged kids to stay in school. To get their degree or diploma, to gain knowledge and to have something to fall back on in case your dreams of becoming a superstar don’t come to fruition.
This is one of the main reasons I respect Aaliyah so much. Because in a world full of self centered, ego-maniacal superficial “stars” she focused on what really matters. She stayed grounded. She graduated High School with a 4.0 GPA. Whilst still being successful with 2 double platinum albums under her belt.
Yes. This is what should be glorified.
“Bow down” to intelligence. Not ignorance.
